An Unstructured Summer Day

It may sound funny for an architect to dream of unstructured time, even when enjoying time-off. However, if you are a golfer, as I am, you know that you have to decide, in advance, where and when to play-hoping that the weather gods cooperate, and that your assigned playing partners are friendly and helpful (ball-finding anyone?). Golf is fun for me, even when I’m not playing at my best (which is most of the time).

Independence Day 2025 was predicted to be one of those gorgeous weather days that we are pretty lucky to have many of in New England, but of course we couldn’t get a tee time at the last minute. I’m dog-sitting for my son’s dogs, so I’ve been able to walk with no destination in mind while accompanied by two adorable pugs. I’ve been able to eat, drink, and read when I want (no lunch date/meeting).  I’ve been able to sit on the porch and read and write this post (by hand), while listening to the beautiful songs of house wrens (thank you Picture Bird for identifying the sound). I don’t feel the urgency of project deadlines, family requests, friends who are out of town, and my usual volunteer activities are on pause for the summer.

Okay, we have been invited to a neighbor’s barbecue for the 4th of July fireworks spectacular (visible from our neighborhood park), but there is no travel time, and a fluid start time, so it fits my unstructured Summer day “plan” perfectly!

I’ll be back to a more structure work on Monday, but for today, I’m going to let my mind and my body wander and wonder as it will.
